Hello,
I chose D as the correct answer while the correct answer was C.

Isn't D what the passage is trying to get at? The Court made efforts to "accommodate" Native Americans and that's what "accommodation" means. And Line 10 talks about that. I don't see where the correct answer is the opposite of my answer.

Thank you, Maxim.

Hi Maxim,

The use of the word "accommodating" throws people off track here, because with a quick read, it seems like it is talking about accommodating the Native Americans. However, the next sentence tells us that DESPITE accommodation, Native Americans have benefitted from Supreme Court decisions. That tells us that the accommodation is of something else (political compromise, rather than accommodating Native American interests). Read the passage again looking for that context, and I think it'll make this question a bit easier!

Why not E? Its feels as though that answer is implicit in the definition of "accommodating."

Zach,

Be careful with the context of this question. The question asks why the author used that word in line 10. Now, the sentence before line 10 tells us that the Court is accommodating. Line 10 itself goes beyond that and applies what it just said about the nature of the Court to the issue of Native Americans. Because the rest of the passage talks about the positive effects the Court had on Native Americans, but this discussion in line 10 starts with the word "despite", the purpose of line 10 is to contrast the negative (or neutral) effects of the Court in its "accommodating" actions with the positive benefits about to be discussed.
