Hi - can someone please help explain why A (multiphase state) is wrong?

I chose this answer before reading the other options, and I can see why "after processing" is the correct answer, but doesn't "multiphase state" also imply that the movement of crude to the shore happens in phases, i.e. from underground to platform --> platform to shore?

In answering this Must Be True question, it's critical that you find direct support for your answer choice from the passage.

Answer D is directly supported by the first sentence in the passage. "Oil companies need offshore platforms primarily because the oil or natural gas the companies extract from the ocean floor has to be processed before pumps can be used to move the substances ashore" (my emphasis)(lines 1-4).

As for Answer A, the term "multiphase state" has a specific definition that is given in the passage, and you need to use that definition when testing this answer. "Multiphase states" refer to "combinations of liquids, solids, and gases under pressure" (lines 20-21). Multiphase states are a property of crude (i.e. unprocessed) oil and gas. Since the crude needs to be processed before moving it to shore due to the current technology, the processed oil and gas would no longer be in a multiphase state.

Notice how Answer A specifies "in a multiphase state" (my emphasis). This is referring to the state of the crude itself, not that the crude needs to be moved in multiple phases.
