Hi Lillian,

First, if you haven't already done so, I'd recommend reading the earlier forum posts for this question, especially Jay's (Post #3) and Poonam's (Post #5).

In parallel reasoning questions like this, it is critical to make sure that you really understand the relationship between the two terms in the passage before looking at the answer choices.

The reason that the cognitive interview parallels "diet and exercise" in Answer E rather than "exercise alone" has to do with the relationship between the cognitive interview and instructed eye-closure. According to the passage, the cognitive interview is a "complex procedure" (line 22) that uses a variety of strategies (lines 10-15), including instructed eye-closure (lines 48-50).

Instructed eye-closure, on the other hand, is just one of the strategies that is part of the overall the cognitive interview, which is less complex and "requires no special training" (lines 42-47) and that works just as effectively as the cognitive interview (lines 57-60).

In other words, you're looking for an answer that provides two options, one of which is a subset/part of the other option and works just as well as the larger option. Answer B matches this perfectly as explained in Jay's earlier post.

In Answer E, "exercise alone" is a part/subset of "diet and exercise" in the same way that instructed eye-closure is a part/subset of the cognitive interview.

The real problem with Answer E is that the benefits of exercise alone (the parallel for instructed eye-closure) were "less significant" than diet and exercise, when the benefits should be equivalent, as the effectiveness of the cognitive interview and instructed eye-closure are in the passage.
