On my second run I choose D over B because I thought B wasn't supported by the stimulus and that all we know is what didn't work and therefore D was the much stronger answer am I wrong?

Answer choice (D) is the correct answer because we can prove it with the facts above. The stimulus states: "when these barriers were lifted, the standards for song structures broke down and the music became aimless." Thus, the existence of the barriers must have helped rock music in some ways.

Answer choice (B) on the other hand, is too strong. There's nothing in the stimulus that says borrowing from styles more conducive to songs of extended length is required for rock music to become artistic.
