That makes no sense to me, either, Fillingoutbubbles. The question references the first few lines of the second paragraph, and those lines are basically saying "if these horses were being herded for food, we would expect X." Since, according to the following lines, we found something very different than X, it suggests that these horses were not being used as a food source. It's a comparison (or more correctly, a contrast) to show support for Olsen's hypothesis. Line 43, the beginning of the next paragraph, isn't really related, other than to continue to show support through other contrasts.
