Hello there, on page 72 for the practice problem #5/6, it states that there are not any not laws that can be drawn from this rule. Why is that? Also, how do you know when to do the contrapositive(using NOT LAWS) when there is conditional reasoning?

Hi Tommy,

Even if T and P can't be next to each other, T can still take any position we want. T can be in position one, as long as P isn't in position 2, T can be in 2 as long as P isn't in position 1 or 3, and so on and so on.

Similarly for question 6, J can be in 4 as long as K is in 6. J can also be in position 6 as long as K isn't in position 6. And finally, if J is in positions 1, 2, 3, or 5, we don't care about K because the rule doesn't kick in. That is, K can be anywhere if J isn't in 4.

In both of these questions, we don't know anything about the positions of the variables, unless we know other facts. For that reason you can't label not rules.

About contrapositives. The question comes up a lot and it depends on a lot of factors. I know some students who write every contrapositive they can identify and that works for them. Personally I only record contrapositives 2 or 3 times per test. The trade off is clarity versus speed. recording contrapositives will often clarify some inferences, but you are sacrificing your pace on the exam. Since I have gotten used to the language of this exam, I immediately see the contrapositive of almost every single conditional I identify. Of course, that takes a lot of practice and I recommend that you write it out, if you are having any trouble at all with identifying the contrapositive.

I'd recommend you read these great posts by Dave Killoran and Jon Denning on the question: lsat/viewtopic.php?t=114
