requiring mixed case, numbers and symbols seems like overkill for a site that presumably attracts few hackers/account hijack attempts. just one user's opinion.

I'd normally agree, but we've been crushed by hackers multiple times, including 6000+ posts just last week in a short period of time (and again the week before that). Every time we loosen up the requirements, we get nailed. So, we have no choice but to keep requirements high. Sorry about that :/
