Hello,
I don't understand the correct answer to question seven on the logical reasoning problem set 1.
It has to do with Montagues and Capulets.

Thanks,
Steven

I also had some trouble with this question, and when I was looking back at it, it seemed that most of the information given in the problem is not necessary. Even the extra info given in the stimulus isn't necessary.

We have the following useful statements:

Capulets are not Montagues (same as "if you are a Capulet, then you are not a Montague"): Capulet --> *not* Montague

Anyone who is not a Montague is intemperate (same as "if you are not a Montague, then you are intemperate"): *not* Montague --> intemperate

If you combine, "Capulet --> *not* Montague" with "*not* Montague --> intemperate" you get "Capulet --> intemperate" which is the same thing as (E), "All Capulets are intemperate."

I hope I explained it well. If not, I'm sure someone from PowerScore will chime in and make it more clear. :)

Moshe is correct here (good job Moshe!).

Most of the information here is superfluous, and I've always found this problem somewhat annoying because of that fact. Basically the last two statements of the stimulus produce answer choice (E), and, as Moshe noted, the stimulus info isn't necessary (and that's what really chafes me here--there's a clear intent to waste time by adding that statement).

The thing that has always interested me about this problem is that the last line of the stimulus and the info in the question stem produce a scenario where between M (Montague) and I (Intemperate), one and exactly one of the two always happens. You are either:

1. M and not I

or

2. not M and I

Thanks!
