The problem with answer D, attorneyatpaw, is that Dr. Khan's statements don't allow us to infer what would have happened if things had been different. Any answer about what might have been the case under different circumstances would have to be based on speculation, and not on Khan's claim about the poor conditions. We can't draw an inference based on speculation!
Also, it's entirely possible that the recent observations might have completely disproven the earlier ones, if the conditions were good enough. They could have provided some positive evidence against those earlier claims. Again, because this is all just speculation, we can't know what they would have shown. All we can be sure of is that they may not be entirely trustworthy due to the poor conditions under which the recent observations were made.
