Hi There- Would you please explain why A is incorrect? I was able to see that D was MORE correct, but I wasn't able to eliminate A. Thank you!

Hi WeComeFromOldVA!

There are a couple of places where one can look for the viewpoints of those that criticize Tutuola. One is in the first paragraph: "Others, however, dismissed his works as simple retellings of local tales, full of unwelcome liberties taken with the details of the well-known story lines" (lines 8-11). Another is in the next paragraph--"Many of his critics are right to suggest that Tutuola’s subjects are not strikingly original" (lines 21-23).

Both of these indicate that his critics criticize Tutuola for lack of originality. Lines 8 to 11 match up especially well with answer choice (D) because that answer choice captures the lack of originality plus his alterations of or liberties with well-known story lines.

If there is something about the passage or answer choice that made you inclined to choose answer choice (A), please do feel free to elaborate on your reasoning, which might be helpful for explaining why (A) is incorrect. As mentioned, there are only a couple spots where the viewpoint of Tutuola's critics is discussed, and you'd want to be looking at those places in particular. It's not clear how the material at either of line references above provide any support for (A).
