As Eveline mentioned in an earlier post above, the word "may" here needs to be read in context with the rest of the sentence, specifically the hypothetical indicated by the word "if" at the beginning of the sentence.
Also, notice how Answer E here "fits" better within the overall point of the passage and the other correct answers, such as the Main Point question 22. The first paragraph lays out a foundational idea of scientific research, and the new model of Sommerer and Ott calls into question that foundation. This is a fairly common theme in science passages, i.e. new research or new scientific theories calling into question traditional views.
