Hello,

I am in a situation where I have an overall GPA of a 2.9 according to the LSAC because it includes AP credit from high school, however, from sophomore of college on I have a 3.4 GPA. Will schools use the 2.9 or see that I took classes years ago that counted towards my GPA and overlook that?

Also, my LSAT score is a 164 and SMU is my first choice. My LSAT score is above average but my GPA is below so the UGPA and LSAT score calculator gives me a large percentage range for acceptance. However, according to the LSAC's ABA Statistics chart they accepted 25/29 students with my GPA and LSAT score combination. Which would be more accurate to estimate my chances? What else can I do to improve my chances?

Thanks

Hi E,

Thanks for the questions! A few thoughts here:

First, the school will use your LSAC calculated GPA. It's unavoidable, and it's just the way things are done. What I would do, however, is write an addendum about your GPA, explain the difference between LSAC's GPA and your school GPA, and show that an upward trend occurred. That's the best thing you can do in this situation.

Second, the 25/29 is the most specific, and the one I'd use if I was looking at it. Of course, the supposed chances aren't really relevant when you get down to it since it's all about individual cases, but with a 164 you have a decent shot. So, lock down everything else: make sure your personal statement is rock solid, get killer LORs, and crush that addendum. Take any possible uncertainty out of the situation and attempt to remove any reason for them to reject you.

Please let me know if that helps. Thanks!
