I was down to A, B, and C and the only reason I didn't pick A was because taphonomy wasn't introduced until the next paragraph and I wasn't sure if it could be used to study modern hunter-gatherer societies. I couldn't differentiate between B and C because both seemed to be things the author would agree with. Please help.

ashpine,

Line 14 is talking about anthropologists who confuse the life-styles of today’s nonindustrial peoples with those of distant hominid forebears. The author thinks that, in fact, hominids in the distant past were very different from currently-existing nonindustrial peoples. Some way to compare and contrast those groups with each other would be a good thing. Comparing and contrasting current societies with other current societies will not be expected to do any good in applying that to early hominids.
