Hello, I was stuck between A and D for this one. Can you please explain why A is correct?

Hi oliviab97!

To start, the concept of feedback loops is contained in the third paragraph. We're told there that "a small temperature drop could result in a significant regional fluctuation in climate if its effects were amplified by climatic feedback loops" (lines 39-41). More specifically, the paragraph goes on to state that a "small temperature drop" (line 42) could have the effect of "amplifying the cooling" (line 46).

So to abstract from that, a feedback loop involves phenomenon A occurring, leading to X, which leads to Y, which in turn makes phenomenon A occur to an even greater extent. And that's what answer choice (A) provides--decaying matter in the soil leads to X, which leads to Y, which leads to even more decaying matter.
