Hi,
I chose C. I see it in passage B but not passage A, which answers the question. The only time I see causal language is when it's mentioned in the first sentence, which I feel doesn't play a role in the argument of passage A. Does it still count somehow?

Thanks,

Hi Richie,
Thank you for your question.

Yes, it this case the causality plays a role in introduction of the argument albeit a minor one. Compare that to (A) mental disorder which is not mentioned at all in Passage A.

I hope this helps.

christine,

Sure!

Free choice comes up in the fourth sentence of passage A.

Causality comes up in the first sentence and third sentence of passage A (the discussion of "pulling strings" involves causation).

Self-delusion comes up in the fourth sentence of passage A.

Moral responsibility comes up in the first sentence of the second paragraph of passage A ("freely chosen immoral acts").

I thought that C was correect because I didn't recognixe that causality is consequential in 1st few lines.

Would this AC be correct because it frames the entire argument? Would it be correct if it said, for example, that A did NOT cause B?

I am struggling to see how this causality would play a role in an "argument" if it didn't affect the argument. I thought that kleptomania and mental disorders were mentioned in Passage B but did not play a ROLE in the argument?

Thanks again

Hi Dancingbambarina!

Causality is relevant to the argument of both passages, which is why we can eliminate answer choice (C). Even if the word "cause" isn't used too much, it still suffuses the overall discussion of determinism versus free will.

By contrast, you rightly note that Passage B discusses mental disorders, which are missing from Passage A's discussion. This is why answer choice (A) is correct. They do indeed play a role in the argument of Passage B. For example, they instantiate what can lead to "constrained actions."
