If a site dates from the 8th century, it has to be discovered by Oliphant. That means that being discovered by Oliphant is a requirement for all sites dating from the 8th century. So if we have a site that was not discovered by Oliphant, we can be sure that it didn't date from the 8th century. It would not meet the requirements of that category.
If you wanted to draw it out, it would look like this:
8th C Oliphant
Oliphant 8th C
