Complete Question Explanation

Strengthen—FIB. The correct answer choice is (D)

In this stimulus, a consultant makes a recommendation concerning how the Grodex Corporation should train its workers. There are innovative educational methods used to teach children to think more creatively. These methods work for children, but with the tradeoff that the children become less capable of memorizing large amounts of information.

The jobs at Grodex require creative thinking, but not a strong ability to memorize. Based on this, the consultant concludes that Grodex “should probably conduct its employee-training seminars using the innovative methods.” However, there is a problem with this conclusion.

Essentially, the consultant assumes training is training, regardless of whether the student is a child or an adult employee at the Grodex Corporation. But we do not know that is the case. It seems reasonable to think there would be significant differences between teaching a child the things that a child learns, and teaching an employee something work-related. This assumption about the effectiveness of the innovative educational methods in the corporate training setting is a weakness in the argument.

The question stem indicates that this is a Strengthen question. The task is to select that answer choice that best fills the blank in the stimulus following the word “because.” Our prephrase is that the correct answer choice will tell us that the same educational technique that works with children will work with employee training as well.

Answer choice (A): The past education of the Grodex employees is not at issue. The evidence we need to support the conclusion is that the same, innovative methods used with the children will also work with the Grodex employees.

Answer choice (B): This answer choice sets up a comparison between companies that use some innovative educational methods and those that conduct no training seminars at all. The issue here is whether Grodex should use certain educational methods as opposed to other educational methods.

Answer choice (C): The percentage of employees that regularly attend the company’s training seminars does not support or hurt the conclusion about which type of educational method the company should use.

Answer choice (D): This is the correct answer choice, because it explicitly provides what the consultant assumed, that if an educational method helps children to think more creatively, then it will probably help adults think more creatively as well.

Answer choice (E): The Grodex employees do not have a strong need to memorize information, and there is no indication that they have any deficiencies in memorization. This answer choice is irrelevant to the conclusion.

Hi lsat2016,

Thanks for your question. To help us identify and clarify the issues you encountered when approaching this question, please provide a detailed breakdown of how you understood the argument. At the very least, we expect to see evidence that you were able to:
  • Deconstruct the stimulus into premises/conclusion.
  • Understand whether the conclusion logically follows from the premises, and if not - why not?
  • Correctly identify the type of question in the stem.
  • Prephrase an answer to that question. (Don't be afraid if your prephrase was off - we still need to see what it was).
  • Defend your choice of (incorrect) answer choice.
The more you tell us about your method of approach, the better we can help you figure it out :)

Thanks!

Hi,

I picked D but I was iffy about eliminating B because it says that corporations that used these innovative methods were successful. If they're successful, isn't that a basis for reasoning that the innovative methods should be used?

I'm still unsure about your explanation above and why you think it’s a faulty comparison for answer choice B. If it’s better than nothing (no training seminars at all), isn't that a reason for doing it? Why does it necessarily have to be better than another method?

Thanks for the follow-up.

The reason why answer choice (B) doesn't work is precisely because the argument is about deciding which of two methods to use. The author wasn’t trying to compare using educational seminars vs. not using any. Rather, the issue is whether the innovative seminars would be better than the alternative (the rote memorization technique).

Let me give you a (simplified) example of this predicament:
You are trying to decide between the Logic Games Bible (LGB) and LSAT for Dummies. Multiple studies suggest that the LGB has been tremendously helpful in developing the skills necessary to excel on the LSAT, whereas LSAT for Dummies amounts to little more than rote memorization. You conclude from this that you're better off using the LGB.
Do you really think that the following proposition would strengthen your argument:
Studying for the LSAT using the LGB is better than not studying for it at all.
Clearly not. Just because something is better than nothing doesn't mean it's better than a competing alternative, such as the LSAT for Dummies.

Does that make sense? Let me know.

Thanks! :)

Hi! I got this question correct; however, I was confused as to why this turned out to be a strengthen question. Upon reading the question stem, I thought it would be a main point question. After reading the answer choices, I found that D was the only one that made sense and yes it does strengthen the argument but I thought this question stem was a MP question stem. thanks!

LSAT180Please,

When you get a "complete the argument" question stem, you need to look to the sentence that needs completion to determine what your task is. Since the clause begins with "because," you know that your goal is to locate a premise that supports the consultant's recommendation. The word "because" is what tells you that you are seeking a premise rather than stating a main point.
