Main Point
(See the complete passage discussion here: forum.powerscore.com/viewtopic.php?f=893&t=38294)

The correct answer choice is (A).

The first paragraph describes a recent court case, and presents the copy-shop owner's argument. The author says that this case was unique because the copying was done by a copy-shop and for a profit.

The second paragraph outlines the law behind copyright protection. The court's ruling, in favor of the copy-shop owner, is explained in the context of these laws.

The third paragraph goes into further detail with regard to the court's view and holding.

The Main Point of this passage can be found by analyzing how the three paragraphs work together: the point is to describe a specific, unique court case, then explain the law behind the ruling in that court case.

I was stuck between A and D and am not sure why A is the correct answer. I thought D was a main point that could be supported by each paragraph whereas A was too specific.

Hi Claudia,

Choice (D) comes very close to describing the main point of the passage. However, to select this answer you would need to find support for the idea that the court has "limit[ed] the rights of publishers to seek suit" in this way. We know that the court did not agree with the publishers, but we do not know if they ever limited when or how publishers can seek similar suits in the future.

While choice (A) may seem overly specific, I'm not sure how you can compare (A) to (D) and say that (D) is supported by each paragraph and (A) is not. Both (A) and (D) attempt to describe the end result of the court case; the only difference between them is that choice (D) incorrectly characterizes what the court did.

Hi,

Why is the answer to Question 1 not B?

Answer Choice A clearly outlines what the end of paragraph 2 and the beginning of paragraph 3 state, however Im confused as to how this is the main point of the passage?

Answer Choice B refers to paragraph 2 primarily, but do we assume it is incorrect because it does not specifically mention that the "fee was not based on the content of the works"?

Thus, any help explaining why B is wrong and A is right would be amazing. thank you!

concrottrox11,

If course packs were protected by copyright law, that would mean the publishers win - remember that the copyright is with the publishers, they're suing, and the person who doesn't want copyright law to apply (or, at least, wants exceptions made to the normal requirements of copyright law) was the copy shop owner, who won the case. Answer choice (B) leaves one with the strong impression that the publishers won the case! That's completely opposite to what happened.

The point of the passage was that the copy shop owner did not usurp the role of the publishers but instead just went about his normal business of selling copies on a per-page basis. Answer choice (A) captures that perfectly.
