I correctly chose A, but it took valuable time for me to eliminate E. Please confirm that E is wrong, because it refers to annual average SURFACE temperature (line 10 is average annual air temperature) and it says landmasses and bodies of water (line 11 only mentioned landmasses NOT bodies of water).

That's exactly right!

It looks like choice (E) could confuse us into thinking that the phrase "over the landmasses" in line (10) refers to the surface temperature of those landmasses.
