This problem has me stuck. I can’t get passed why 4 doesn’t have G on the D in 7 template. What am I missing? The Anwser key doesn’t really explain why G becomes irrelevant. Explain please.

Hi Alexis,

Ok, I think I follow your question here, which is focused on the top 2 templates on page 115, right? Assuming I've got that right, in those two templates, after C is placed in 6 there are only two spots for the E __ __ F block: either in 1-4 or 2-5. In the 1-4 template F is in 4, so that's not an option for G. That leaves us with the topmost template.

In that option, we have the following:

  •     ..... E ..... ..... .....        F ..... C ..... D
    1 ..... 2 ..... 3 ..... 4 ..... 5 ..... 6 ..... 7
At that point, A becomes an issue, and is ultimately why G can't be in 4. The first rule states that "Company A does not occupy building 1, 3, 5, or 7," and so A now has no choice but to occupy 4:

  •     ..... E ..... .....    A ..... F ..... C ..... D
    1 ..... 2 ..... 3 ..... 4 ..... 5 ..... 6 ..... 7
Thus, B and G—the two remainders—are left to rotate between 1 and 3.

Please let me know if that helps. Thanks!
