We recently received the following question from a student. An instructor will respond below. Thanks!
Hi! Regarding your Guessing Strategies for LR, there appears to be an inconsistency, with recommendations for the most challenging questions/questions at the end. In some places on your website, the suggestion is to select "A" and in other areas, "E". The explanation provided for choosing "A" makes complete sense to me, but I am wondering about "E". Is the material making a distinction between questions that are simply difficult, and ones that make up the last five questions of a section?

Hi!

There is no inconsistency here since the website is talking about different parts of the section!

That is because there are different answer choices occur more frequently in different situations. Also, keep in mind that the hardest questions are not necessarily the last five questions in the section.

1) Overall, in logical reasoning, your best bet is to choose answer choice (D), as it occurs SLIGHTLY more frequently than the other answer choices.

2) In the last 5 answer choices in logical reasoning, answer choice (E) occurs SLIGHTLY more frequently than all the other answer choices.

3) If it's a really difficult question, answer choice (A) occurs more frequently than all the other choices.

All of these patterns are trumped by eliminating incorrect answer choices and guessing from what's left.

A fantastic breakdown of guessing strategies (with links to the most current guessing tables) can be found here.

Hope that helps!
