I got this one wrong because I didn't know what "acceded" meant and substituted the word "relented", so the evolutionary biologists "relented" to the general intellectual disdain for the merely particular. This made me think the biologists gave into pressure, which brought me to B. How could I have gotten this right without knowing what "acceded" meant? What should I do in future exams if I run across a word I don't know or a sentence I don't understand?

Hi Tajadas,

(B) is outside the scope because it talks about who respects whom. In the future, if you encounter a word you don't know, if you can break down the word into its root components, you can guess at the word's meanings. "Ac" means "toward" and "cede" means "to go" or "move." "Accede" also sounds similar to "concede." Both "con" and "ac" are "positive" prefixes.
