When I was considering the question, I was leaning towards A, but recognized that D was a strong contender.
I chose A, "Anyone who relies on movies and electronic media for entertainment is unable to form a strong bond of mutual trust with a citizen," by attempting to diagram the argument. I ended up with the implication that if one relies on movies/media for entertainment, then they cannot form bonds.
RMEM----->unable to form a strong bond of mutual trust---> cannot have a democratic society
This argument is missing the part about participation. I think I understand why I missed the question.
After looking at the question again on blind review, I think I have it:
In order to have strong bonds, then citizens must participate: If participate----> strong bonds----> Democratic society
Relying on movies and electronic media for entertainment generally makes people less likely to participate in groups outside their families.
D is the answer because it is not as strong (less likely vs. unable), but it also completes the argument.
RMEM---->less likely to participate in groups outside families---->unable to form a strong bond of mutual trust-----> cannot have a democratic society.
Did I get why D is correct and why A is incorrect?
