Hi,

I narrowed down the answer choices to B and D but I picked B. May you please explain why D is correct? Also, do I diagram this problem? (If so, how is that done?)

Thanks,
Brittany

Hi Brittany,

Thanks for your question. It would be helpful to know how you broke down the problem. How did you go about narrowing down the answer choices?

Let me know--thanks!

hi,

This is a formal logic question, and if you're enrolled in one of our Full-Length courses you can access a detailed explanation of how to diagram such questions on-line (Lesson 8 Supplemental material).

Here's the diagram:

Pet stores :most: Birds :most: Fish

Fish and NOT birds  Gerbils :dblline: Independently owned

The only inference we can draw from these two diagrams is that if a store sells fish but not birds, it cannot be an independently owned store. This is an additive inference that results from the conditional relationship in the second diagram.
