Hello,

I don't understand why (A) is wrong.

I thought the part "ignoring a native culture's own self-understanding" would reflect the Greek example and "substituting fabricated traditions and rituals" part would reflect the second example. If this is a wrong interpretation, could you explain why?

Thank you.

Hi, Astroworld!

Good question!

Answer choice (A) puts too much emphasis on what the "imperial societies" are doing.

This is a main point question that needs to encompass the author's thesis and the correct topical scope in the passage.

While the imperial societies' attempts to obfuscate the heterogeneous backgrounds of the societies they colonize are part of the narrative, this answer fails to capture the broader issue of cross cultural imagined historical narratives, among the colonizers, the colonized, and the initial example of the Greeks.

The correct answer needs to place the emphasis severally on all the different cultures discussed, without giving primacy to any one of the subjects of the passage. Notice how answer choices (A) and (C) highlight the imperial societies; answer choices (B) and (D) highlight the colonized. Only answer choice (E) is appropriately neutral in this respect.

I hope this helps!
