Hi!

I chose (D) because it was weaker than (E), which was my other contender. Specifically because it says the number of people per vehicle has increased, not the number of vehicles. So it really has no effect on the argument.

Even still, I cannot find a reason to rule (E) out? Is it referencing a scenario where driving faster could make one safer? Or is it implying people can drive faster during the day because it is safer?

Hey mmjd,

The argument is that driving during the day is more dangerous than at night and the premise to support that is the number of traffic accidents resulting in death. If answer choice (E) were true, people driving faster only during the day might contribute to the overall dangerousness of daytime driving by increasing the likelihood that people are going to get into an accident resulting in death. The faster you go, generally, the more fatal a collision will be.

Now is (E) a great way to strengthen the argument? No. There's a couple leaps in logic we have to make here and there are ways to poke holes in the argument even with (E) added. However, as you said, answer choice (D) definitely does not strengthen the argument at all, therefore it is the correct answer.
