I was stuck on A and B. Are they wrong because they use the words "typically" and "generally"? The passage only talks about one instance, bebop, but that doesn't mean the author thinks those principles apply all the time (outside of bebop). For D, does "turns of phrase" refer to phrases like "billion dollar rut", "harmonic and melodic blind alley"? I was unsure what "turns of phrase" meant when I saw this answer choice...

Hey lemonade,

Yes, "turns of phrase employed by historians" here means the phrases such as "threadbare, harmonic and melodic blind alley, billion-dollar rut", etc. The passage argues that these metaphors are representative of the actual attitudes towards jazz and bebop.

Answer choices (A) and (B) are not true according to the passage. In the second paragraph, the author says "these writers" believed commercialism was the driving force for artistic progress, but the author themselves does not align themselves with this belief, so (A) cannot be right.

The author also does not seem to indicate that all new movements in music begin with rejecting the fundamental principles of the reigning musical style - bebop didn't necessarily reject the fundamentals of jazz, it evolved them, so (B) is not supported.

Hope that helps!
