Hey Claire,

Questions like this will have answer choices directly supported by the passage, so the easiest way to find the correct answer would be to find where the passage is referencing commonly held ideas about bebop - in this case, the first two sentences of the final paragraph.

Answer choice (D) is supported by the second sentence of the last paragraph "it idealizes the circumstances of artistic creation"

This paragraph also helps us eliminate answer choices (A) and (E). The author tells us the commonly held belief is that bebop was anticommercial, which means (A) cannot be correct and (E) is not a commonly held belief.

Answer (B) is incorrect, bebop originated from jazz not classical music, and answer (C) is not supported by the passage.

Hope that helps!

I was stuck on D and E because for E although it says that bebop was anticommercial, it seems like it was saying "it may seem like bebop was anticommercial but actually it was shaped by commericial pressures since it was a system of transactions defining music as a profession, making their achievements possible". Doesn't that show how the origins of bepop were shaped by commerical pressures, because it allowed them to obtain their achievements through mass market capitalism?

Be careful with the question here, lemonade. The question is about the accounts of bebop, not the actual genre of bebop. Answer choice (E) describes bebop itself, while answer choice (D) describes the accounts of bebop's development. The accounts were overly idealistic and didn't recognize the extent to which bebop was also shaped by commercial pressures.

Hope that helps!
