Hi,

I am struggling between answers A and B. I understood the main idea as "the typical accounts of the origins of bepob are misleading because they have focused people's reactions against commercialism, but commercialism is an essential part of music."

Is A not negative enough of the typical accounts? It says that the accounts have "overemphasized commercialism" but not that they are inaccurate in some ways. (In the last paragraph, the author takes a strong stance, saying they are "a poor basis for historical inquiry). "

Whereas B uses stronger language, saying that the typical accounts "misrepresent" the relationship between bepob's originators to mass-market capitalism. This seems to incorporate more of the author's opinion, which is clarified in the last paragraph.

As I see it, nonowing, the problem with answer A is not that it's too negative, but that it focuses on the wrong topic. The passage is not primarily about the decline of swing music, but about the creation of what came next: bebop.

I do also think that "overemphasizes" is probably the wrong word. The author believes that commercial concerns did play a role in the birth of bebop, but it was not the role that the typical jazz historian thinks it played. So it's not so much an overemphasis, but a misrepresented one, as answer B says.
