Is (A) wrong because crossbreeding does not inherently signify introducing genes from other organisms—i.e., it could just mean breeding the superior sheep breeds with other sheep to spread the better genes around? Further, where is the textual support for (D) in the passage? I came close to picking (A) and only changed to (D) at the last minute, so I would like to get a better grasp of this question. Thank you!

Hi Catallus!

Regarding answer choice (A), your reasoning seems to make sense. There's simply a lack of support in the passage for answer choice (A), as we're not told anywhere that crossbreeding involves introducing genes from other organisms.

Regarding answer choice (D), support can be found around lines 50-55. We're told there that the sheep that produce some of the most valuable wool can be "kept as breeding stock."
