This is on the passage about Jackie Ormes.

I know we're supposed to be hyper alert and meticulous in our reading of the answer choices. For question 2 when it asks what is most strongly suggested by the passage, I chose D because I couldn't locate any support for the other answers but I was super hesitant because of the time period in this answer choice 1920s-1930s. The only stated time period in this passage is at the beginning 1937-1938. Are we just supposed to infer that the time period falls in a general range? Other than that the other aspects of this answer choice seem to align with the line "Ormes celebrated and amplified the success of real African Americans who had achieved wide respect for their skill as hardworking and talented professionals."

Am I missing something that I was not able to connect to this answer choice better?

Thank you

Hi dinosaur,

You're right that the passage doesn't explicitly mention the 1920s, and the only specific dates provided in the passage are 1937-1938, when the comic strip ran.

Although the comic strip ran in 1937-1938, it is describing a time period that roughly covers the 1920s and 1930s. By the time the comic strip was written, The Cotton Club was already "famed," as described in the passage.

While it isn't specifically mentioned in the passage, this comic strip takes place during the Harlem Renaissance, a time period that covers the 1920s and 1930s. The Cotton Club, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway are all associated with the Harlem Renaissance. It may be that the test makers expected test takers to have some familiarity with this topic, although not everyone would.

It looks like you approached the question the right way. You were right to be wary of details not mentioned in the passage, but ultimately chose the best answer.
