Good afternoon,

I am working on question #22. I was wondering how one would come to the conclusion to actively choose to diagram answer M to check whether or not it could be ranked no faster than third (is it because M is the random and unpredictable?). Furthermore, in the answer key, the opening said not to diagram the not laws to save to save time- is there some way to know when to diagram a certain answer choice or part of a question in order to be time savvy?

The correct answer choice for this question is C. If your copy of the book says that the answer is D, then that is a misprint. It must be true that L is ranked no faster than fifth, because of the K _ _ L block and F or G having to be first.

M is truly random and unpredictable - other than not being first or last, there's nowhere M can't be! You did well to see that.

As far as the Not Laws, you'll find that as you practice more with Games, you'll be drawing out less and less Not Laws. Over time, you'll learn to recognize where they have to be without taking the time to write them - and yes, it is very much a question of being time savvy.

In this case, it makes more sense to simply draw out the H _ J and K _ _ L blocks rather than write out Not Laws for every place those four cannot be. The Not Laws are implied by the existence of the blocks. If you feel the need to write out Not Laws for now, that's fine, but over time, you'll want to shave some time from your Games section - and that's a great place to do so.
