with regards to question 9, at line 38 it says that the tadpole becomes larger which is also an answer choice. Is it incorrect because line 35 says it "can" trigger this event and we are looking at this from a mbt perspective?

Question 9 is indeed a MBT question. It is asking what the passage says must be true about at least some spade foot toad tadpoles. C is the correct answer choice, because of what you saw at line 38, yes.

Line 35 doesn't disqualify C as correct, because the question is asking about some tadpoles, and it is true that some tadpoles do grow larger when they become carnivores.
