I am currently working on my applications and am struggling with who to ask for LORs/Evaluations. I've been out of school for over a decade, so I do not have professors to ask. I know that it is recommended to ask an employer or supervisor/manager if you are a "non traditional" student. However, I have been self employed as a small business owner for the past 9 years. I am the sole owner of my restaurant, and I'm having trouble because I don't have a partner or boss. Most of my professional relationships in the business are with sales reps and distributors, but there is not a lot of "intellectual" exchange in the industry. I have one recommendation from a man who chairs a community board with me, but I'm not sure what else to do?

Hi Bj,

In these situations, I recommend opting for whoever know you the best, even if your relationship isn't the classic "professor-student" or "manager-employee" association. Perhaps you have some business friends who own their own businesses? Or perhaps your banker? Or even a long-time employee with whom you have a tremendous relationship?

What you need is someone who can speak to your character, work ethic, and personal qualities in a meaningful and insightful manner. Even if they are a bit unusual in their relationship with you, that's ok—just make sure they are detailed in what they say. For more on that aspect, check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3IC9ZVl6FE.

So, you may have to go beyond the norm in seeking a second recommender, but that won't automatically be an issue. Best of luck and please let me know if this helps. Thanks!
