Thanks Dave for the feedback on my previous post! I made it more personal, though I'm not sure if it is sufficient. I decided to mention how location is a huge factor for me since almost all my family lives in NC and I may want to practice here after graduation. Thanks so much for the help! :-D

---------------------------------------------------------

As a student in the Duke-UNC Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program, my professor sparked my interest in the intersection between law and business. I loved theorizing about politics and economics, but the desire to pursue a career with a more tangible impact led me to an interest in law and business. Although my main interest is in the law, I would like to take courses in business to complement my knowledge. Duke allows for students to take courses at Fuqua without being a JD/MBA candidate, allowing students to learn from two world class institutions. I wasn’t able to take any business courses at UNC, and, since I hope to one day work in that field of law, I would very much like to take advantage of the knowledge Fuqua has to offer.

In an effort to get my feet wet and reduce the experience gap with what would be my mostly older classmates, I would also like the opportunity to gain more experience in the real world during my time in law school. The Start-Up Ventures Clinic provides a unique opportunity for students to directly advise and assist start-up companies. As a current UNC student, I know that the Triangle is one of the most educated areas in the country, ripe for a continuous stream of new companies seeking the counsel of lawyers. The clinic offers an unmatched degree of immersion, easing the path for Duke students to serve as counsels to companies or work for a corporate law firm. I believe that my background in philosophy, political science, and economics would also add a unique perspective to the school and to the clinic.

Duke’s location in Durham is another characteristic that is very important to me. As a North Carolina native, Duke is only three hours from my hometown, and only a fifteen minute drive down 15-501 from my current university. Almost half of my family lives in Charlotte and the Triangle, and I would feel blessed to have the privilege to visit them after only a small drive. It is an area I am already familiar with, and this would significantly ease the transition from my undergraduate career to law school. My background also leaves me open to the possibility of practicing law in Charlotte or the Triangle, and no other law school has a stronger reputation in North Carolina than Duke.

The opportunity for meaningful interaction is another factor that draws me to Duke. At a school as large as UNC, it can feel isolating to be stuck in large class sizes. After having taken advantage of courses over academic breaks, I know the closeness that that they provide offer an advantage to students who choose to partake in them. The Wintersession at Duke affords students such an opportunity. Students are able to learn from lawyers, faculty, and alumni in a more intimate classroom, rather than feeling like they barely know their professor. This is a rare opportunity not offered at other law schools, and another reason why I feel that Duke is the best fit for me.

Hi Roshan,

Thanks for reposting this. It's typically very difficult for us to review the same essay multiple times, but I will do it for you. However, I have a basic rule when I work with essays: revisions that are submitted in anything less than 48 hours probably haven't been edited thoroughly enough, and the changes that were made haven't been thought about nearly enough. Writing spectacular essays (which is your goal) is not a fast process, and since I made my comments just a few hours ago, I know this isn't ready for a re-read. If I'm going to read it a second time, I would request that you give it another few days and make sure it's as good as possible. Is that fair?

Thanks!
