Complete Question Explanation

Resolve the Paradox. The correct answer choice is (B)

The stimulus indicates that artificial-turf athletic fields cause fewer athlete injuries than natural-grass fields and are cheaper to maintain than natural-grass fields. Nonetheless, the committee recommends replacing the current artificial-turf field with a natural-grass field. The question stem asks you to resolve this apparent paradox.

Answer choice (A): If this answer is true, this provides even more justification for the committee to recommend switching to a natural-grass field. In this sense, this is an Opposite answer.

Answer choice (B): This is the correct answer choice. This answer shows that although the facts in the stimulus regarding the injury rate are true, the injuries sustained on artificial-turf fields are worse and cost more to heal. Because the greater severity of the injuries and the greater cost to heal could offset the lower injury rate and lower expenses of the artificial-turf field, this answer provides an explanation for why the committee made the recommendation to switch to a natural-grass field.

Answer choice (C): The stimulus is about injuries and costs. This answer, which addresses spectator perspective, is not relevant to explaining the issue in the stimulus.

Answer choice (D): This answer does not provide sufficient information to determine that natural-grass fields have an advantage. Although the answer shows that artificial-turf fields require repair, this is offset by the fact that natural-grass fields need daily maintenance. As there is no clear advantage of one field type over the other, this answer cannot explain why the committee recommended switching to a natural-grass field.

Answer choice (E): Some students select this answer on the belief that this explains why the committee would want to have a natural-grass field. However, there is nothing to support the assumption that a majority of the athletes in question have spent most of their playing time on natural-grass fields. If most of the athletes at the university are used to playing on artificial-turf fields, then this answer would not explain why the committee recommended the switch.

Hi,

Having trouble determining between answer A and B....

Answer A you say justifies the committees recommendation to switch to a natural grass field...

I get why Answer B is correct but is it because it is talking about insures vs switching to natural grass (more specific)

Both A and B to me support switching to natural grass which is what the question is asking just having trouble determining the real difference between them... is it because B is more specific ie. pertaining to athletes injuries?

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your question!

The paradox we're trying to resolve in this question is why the university would recommend switching from artificial turf to natural grass in spite of the fact that artificial turf is (1) less likely to lead to athlete injuries and (2) cheaper to maintain than natural grass fields. From the facts presented in the stimulus, is appears that artificial turf is both safer and cheaper than natural turf.

Answer choice (A) describes the "extensive maintenance" that the university has carried out to maintain the artificial turf. This doesn't necessarily undercut the fact in the premise that artificial turf is cheaper to maintain than natural grass. Perhaps both types of turf require "extensive maintenance," but if artificial turf is still cheaper than natural grass, why switch?

The other point worth considering in comparing answer choice (A) to (B) is that answer choice (B) addresses both of the facts raised in the stimulus about (1) injuries and (2) cost. Essentially, answer choice (B) fully explains why the committee would make a choice that, on its face, appears more expensive and more dangerous. Answer choice (B) gives us some new information that indicates that natural grass is actually less expensive and safer than artificial turf.

By contrast, answer choice (A) only addresses the issue of maintenance / cost, not injuries.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

However, there isn't any precision regarding how often injuries are sustained on both kinds of turfs besides "fewer injuries on artificial-turf athletic fields than on natural-grass fields."

It could be 2 injuries per season on the natural grass field and 1 on the artificial one. I'm not quite sure to understand how answer B would be correct in that case.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ronaldo,

You are correct that there's not any information on how often injuries are sustained. However, we're being asked to pick the answer that most helps to resolve the discrepancy. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be the most helpful out of the five choices. Answer choice (B) most clearly deals with the issues brought up in the stimulus.

Does that make sense?
