Could you say that answer choice E is using a part-to-whole flaw by suggesting that the air conditioners are more reliable based on the components it is made out of?

Hi lmasta,

If someone tried to infer that the Japanese systems must be more reliable because their components are more reliable, then they'd be engaging in a part to whole fallacy. But it's reasonable to infer that the reliability of the components makes it at least somewhat more likely that Japanese systems on the whole are more reliable (because, after all, there is some relationship between the components and the whole system). So the statement in answer choice E has some (if modest) explanatory power for statement I. in the stimulus. The larger problem with answer choice E is that it cannot explain at all (and, in fact, makes it harder to understand) statement II., about why the U.S. systems have the same lifetime as Japanese systems.
