Hello,
So the rule representation for this was: M1  MK (block)
And the correct answer choice was :C. M cannot sing first unless K sings immediately after M. How do we know that the Unless Equation was applied.

I had initially picked B. If M sings first, then K sings some time after M. I'm thinking this is wrong b/c MK is in a block meaning that K is right after M not some time after M.

Thankyou
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Your reasoning behind the conclusion that B is incorrect was spot-on: the rule presents an MK block, while B allows for K to be some time after M.

I was somewhat puzzled by your question, "How do we know that the Unless Equation was applied?" The goal of this exercise is to determine a rule that would reflect the original diagram. Answer choice (C) does that. The statement, "M cannot sing first unless K sings immediately after M," is logically equivalent to "If M sings first, then K sings immediately after M." The Unless Equation applies because the necessary condition indicator "unless" is present. Simplifying this rule into its basic if...then form reveals answer choice (C) to be correct.

Hope this helps!
