Tiktaalik would not have stood out as unusual at the time

This is all the proof we need for answer E, lathlee, because if it would not have stood out as unusual at the time then we could not have determined its significance based solely on a comparison to the fish of its time. If we could, that would mean that it DID stand out as unusual. We can only tell how significant it was by looking at what happened later in the evolutionary process.

I was flirting with a couple answers here, namely answer choice A. Could someone explain the approach and thought process behind answering this question correctly?

For this question type, we are looking for an answer choice that we can prove based on the information in the stimulus. As Adam explained above, the stimulus tells us that the Tiktaalik was not unusual compared to the other fish of that era because so many of the fish had variations. Since it wasn't unusual, we can prove answer choice (E), that we couldn't determine the fish's significance just based on comparison to the other fish of the era.

Answer choice (A) on the other hand doesn't have textual support. We don't see any statement that Tiktaalik was on land, used fingers on land, or in any way interacted with the land. We can't support that answer choice with facts from the stimulus.

10) MBT (Tiki earliest fish with fingers. Not unusual at the time. Tiki fingers were important because it is likely that Tiki is an ancestor to many animals with fingers)

A- Do not know if the fish moved on land. It had fingers

B- Uses the term "Modern", don't know if there are still ancestors now.

C- Doesn't support, it could do this and be ancestors to animals.

D- This is extra information. Doesn't support Tiki being top dog

E- This matches what was said in the prompt. Wouldn't be able to determine since it was usual among others. CORRECT
