I chose (C) becuase the line "violence predates the rise in popularity." Isn't that enough justification for (C)?

Sure, Chian.

The critic says that violent lyrics are legal, but lyrics have the power to change the way we act.

The question stem asks which choice is "strongly supported," so we are doing a "must be true" question, and the answer has to be supported by text from the stimulus.

(A) The author's second and third sentences make it clear that the author is comfortable with the distinction between what is legal and what is desirable. The author is not asking for any laws to be changed.
(B) Same problem as (A).
(C) This is contrary to the author's final sentence.
(D) This is supported by the final sentence--lyrics have the power to change the way we act, so if a rock musician chooses less violent lyrics, that may reduce violence.
(E) This goes too far, because the stimulus is only concerned about violence that results from lyrics, not all of the violence in society. There isn't enough information in the stimulus to make a judgment about other sources of violence.
