Hi,

I have already been sent a "hold tight" email from NYU and responded within a week with a formal LOCI (this is my top choice dream school). I received emails this week for the Cornell "reserve" list and Georgetown "preferred waitlist" and am wondering how to proceed.

For Georgetown, which I would highly consider attending, I am wondering whether to respond ASAP with a brief email indicating my interest or with a formal LOCI? However, it is not my real #1 choice school, how do I address this in my response while still indicating my high level of interest? Additionally, the email also made me a bit confused what information they are asking for. It stated:

"In order to make this process as smooth as possible, XYZ, Assistant Director of Admissions, will serve as your direct contact. Please e-mail her/him as soon as possible at lawwaitlist@georgetown.edu to let her/him know your level of interest in Georgetown and whether you are interested in remaining on our waiting list. Also, please keep her/him informed of any deadlines or travel plans that you may have."

Do you have any insight on what the dates and deadlines part is asking for? That is mainly why I am questioning attaching a formal LOCI as I do not know how to include the information they asked for.

I have a similar question for Cornell, as I have been offered to be on the "reserve" list. I think I am less likely to attend Cornell if admitted. Is it best to respond with a formal letter or brief email?

I would appreciate any advice, thank you!

Hi Alanna,

Let's take a look at what they've said.

1. ...let her/him know your level of interest in Georgetown and whether you are interested in remaining on our waiting list.

All you need to do is let them know where they stand. Are you still interested? Very interested? Near the top? All you need to do here is be clear.

2. ...Do you have any insight on what the dates and deadlines part is asking for.

They want to know if there some self-imposed deadline you have on the process, such as you must have a decision by June 1st? The travel part is also quite straighforward—they want to make sure you aren't going to Guatemala or Gabon for the summer and then might be in only intermittent contact (plenty of students take such trips, to the extent it can be an issue).

I would respond to them directly on their points of inquiry, and then save the full LOCI for later. The first rule is always to address what they ask you :-D

Also, with Cornell, if they sent you an email like Gtown did, simply reply to the email. You don't need to overthink this—respond in the same manner they contacted you unless otherwise requested!

Thanks!
