Hi,

Is there a rule that the two mannequins cannot have the same color for the same item? If this is not the case, why is answer choice D is incorrect? Since the jacket and the hat cannot be the same color, it should not make a difference which one is yellow and which one is red as long as they are not the same color.

De facto, there is a rule that "that the two mannequins cannot have the same color for the same item", in that, as the scenario states, the items (hats etc.) have only one of each color. Anyway, if Mannequin 2 has a yellow hat, then by rule 2, the jacket must be a different color. It can't be red, because then Mannequin 2 would have all three colors, forbidden by rule 1. And it can't be navy, because Mannequin 1 has the navy jacket in this question. So, it's an impossible situation, and answer D is wrong.

The rule notes verbatim "Each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from the jacket it wears." So if mannequin 1 wears a red hat, it must have a yellow or navy jacket (must differ from the hat IT wears). The same goes for mannequin 2. By stating that each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from the jacket IT wears, doesn't that make it so that each mannequin must have a jacket color that differs from IT'S OWN hat color? It doesn't say each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from each other's jacket, or each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from a jacket...etc. I could understand if it was a convoluted rule, but it seems to be explicit. How does the statement "each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from the jacket IT wears" translate to "each mannequin wears a hat in a different color from each other?" I'm having a lot of trouble understanding this.

And please explain the de facto rule that neither mannequin can have the same color for any item in detail. I read the previous answer but there is very little detail as to how anyone came to this conclusion.

Hi Matt! Let's talk about your last question first. Look at the way the game is phrased:
There are three hats—one in each color; three jackets—one in each color; three skirts—one in each color; and one red tie. Each mannequin wears exactly one of the hats, one of the jackets, and one of the skirts.
The game tells us that there is only one of each color for each article of clothing. That means there is only one red hat, one navy jacket, etc, to go around. So if mannequin 1 is wearing the red hat for example, that means that mannequin 2 must be wearing either the navy or the yellow hat. Since there's only one of each color of each article of clothing, that means that the two mannequins must always wear different colors of each article.

So back to answer choice (D) - if Mannequin 2 wears the yellow hat, because of Rule 2 that means Mannequin 2 can't wear the yellow jacket. But it can't wear the navy jacket because the question tells us that Mannequin 1 is wearing that. And Mannequin 2 can't wear the red jacket because of Rule 1. So there is no jacket that Mannequin 2 can wear, meaning that (D) is wrong.
