I see that D makes sense, and should have given it more thought while answering the question, but I don't get why A is wrong (the answer I chose). It seems to me that the beginning of the fourth paragraph provides evidence for this answer choice :

" Fugita and O’Brien’s hypothesis illustrates a common problem in studies that investigate the history of ethnic community. Like historians who have studied European ethnic cultures in the United States, Fugita and O’Brien have explained persistence of ethnic community by citing a preexisting sense of national consciousness that is independent of how a group adapts to United States culture."

How does any of that relate to earlier studies?

Remember, the earlier studies focused on transformation. Not only does your reference not talk about earlier studies, the earlier studies would seem manifestly not to have talked about preservation - it's just about the opposite of what they said. So this cannot be a similarity between the two.
