Addendum or Amendment?

Good morning,

I'm reaching out as I am curious whether I should include a full work history in an amended resume or in a work history addendum? My initial thought had been to use the latter, but it may be possible to re-work it into my two page resume and reduce the new files submitted to just one (the updated resume). If I do not add my prior work to my updated resume, I will be submitting two documents. That said, my resume may suffer from the extra chaff.

What do you think? I realize that schools would like to know what you've been up to over the years. To the addendum's credit, it will allow me to explain an employment gap too, though.

Thanks for the post! I'm a bit confused by your question—is there a reason you need to amend your resume? You mentioned you had already submitted a two-page resume, so I'm not sure what would have been missing there.

Hi Stephanie,

Apologies for the lack of clarity there! My original 2-page resume has an abridged work history (recent relevant positions that I currently hold) and cuts out my work history from 5+ years ago. There was a gap between this prior work and my current work, though, so even absent a compelling reason to discuss my customer service jobs, issuing a clarification may be welcome with admissions committees who might not otherwise have a full picture of my work history.

The question, then, is whether to try and squeeze it into one update (which may be difficult) or to submit two new documents into my student portals. Please let me know what you think!

Hi Gaige,

This is a case where it's probably impossible for us to tell without a personal review of the documents because we can't really tell here. Much work history--especially similar jobs --can often be consolidated. It's for this reason that we typically tell clients that you can only go onto a second page with your resume if you have serious, deep accomplishments. A list of jobs wouldn't normally qualify, and on top of that, without knowing what was originally submitted there's no way for us to see exactly what is in the update. That also means that you could probably go either way here and be fine
