I'm pretty sure the question "If none of the children was born" is a grammatical error.

Anyone disagree?

I disagree. In this case, either "was" or "were" would be acceptable, because the question can be interpreted as meaning the same as "not a single one of the children was born." It's more of a style choice in this construction than a case of clearly right or wrong. I personally would have written it as "were," but that doesn't make it an error.
