Hello!

I think in general I'm having difficulty approaching these substitution questions. They are a huge time sucker because I end up drawing through each scenario. What's the best methodical approach to getting these questions right? I need some objectivity lol

Hi Shan,

Doing work up front tends to be a better bet than trying to draw out all the answer choices. Did you make a mini-diagram here?

I started by putting 5 on Friday. That pushes 4 to Thursday, because consecutive floors can't be on the same day, and day 4 has to be either Thursday or Friday. Then I noted the 3-7-5 chain would force 7 into Thursday and 3 into Wednesday. I know that 2 and 8 have to be in a specific order. 2 can't go on Wednesday with 3, and it can never be on Saturday so the only open slot is on Friday, putting 8 on Saturday.

So my set up for this question was

Wed: 3 and either 1/6
Thurs: 7 and 4
Friday 2 and 5
Saturday 8 and 1/6

The only answer choice that has to occur in that set up is answer choice (D).
