Answer choice (D) outlines the organization as three phenomena being explained, their causes examined, then one of the phenomena is described and contrasted with the other two. The water bugs in the passage, however, are not contrasted with the other two types of adaptive responses; instead, the water-bugs are being used to illustrate just the developmental response.
