Hi, for this question I was between A and B but I chose A because in passage B, it says that drillers use different muds to drill shallow v. deeper wells. Could someone point me to the evidence supporting B instead of A? I only found evidence for B in the suggestion that the government monitors the ingredients when overseeing the dumping of discharge. Thanks!

The goal in this question was to select the answer that did NOT have any support in either passage, bli, so your inability to find support for B should tell you that B is indeed the correct answer! You'll find some support for answer A around line 9, I expect, but none for answer B anywhere in the passage. Quite the opposite - the language around line 25-30 tells us that the drilling companies are able to keep the exact ingredients of their recipes secret.

"Each of the following is supported EXCEPT" means you need to eliminate any answer that IS supported, and pick whatever is left (because that will be the one that is NOT supported).

Hope that clears things up for you!

Hi,

I picked D for this question because I could not find any support for this answer choice. I figured it is common sense that oil reserves can be found within or underneath rocks but I would like to know if there are any lines supporting this it.

Thanks,
Sam

Sam,

The first paragraph of passage A talks about "as [the drill] cuts into the rock." If oil-well drilling involves drilling into rock, there must be rock between the surface and the oil. That's all it takes for answer choice (D) to be supported, and therefore incorrect.
