I wouldn't analyze this question using conditional reasoning, as there are no clear, absolute conditional rules. Notice that in the Complete Question Explanation posted above, it is noted that there are no absolute statements made, only relative ones. Conditional reasoning is all about absolute statements. Since we don't have conditional rules, we can't have Mistaken Negations or Mistaken Reversals of those rules.

Let's look at the structure of the sentence in the passage. Current practices cause the animals more pain and distress than do practices that more closely conform to the animals' behavioral tendencies. This allows us to compare the amount of pain and distress currently experienced by animals with the amount of pain and distress they would experience if practices more closely conformed to their behavioral tendencies. Making the change to more closely conform to the behavioral tendencies would be the same as practices that would lessen their pain and distress. If the current situation causes the animals MORE pain than the alternative given, that means the given alternative suggested would lessen their pain and distress.
